Coaching vs. Therapy: Know the Difference Before You Choose

At LYF According 2 Cree, we believe in growth, healing, clarity, and accountability. But we also believe in being honest about what kind of support you need.

Life coaching and therapy can both be valuable, but they are not the same.

What Is Life Coaching?

Life coaching is future-focused and action-based. A coach helps you identify goals, create a plan, build confidence, shift habits, and stay accountable as you move toward the life you want.

Coaching may help with:

  • Personal growth

  • Self-confidence

  • Goal setting

  • Life transitions

  • Accountability

  • Mindset shifts

  • Boundaries

  • Purpose and direction

  • Motivation and follow-through

A life coach does not diagnose, treat, or manage mental health conditions. Coaching is not a replacement for therapy, counseling, psychiatric care, or crisis support.

What Is Therapy?

Therapy is mental health care provided by a licensed professional. Therapists are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional, behavioral, and psychological concerns.

Therapy may be the better choice if you are dealing with:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Trauma

  • Grief

  • Abuse

  • Addiction

  • Suicidal thoughts

  • Panic attacks

  • PTSD

  • Eating disorders

  • Major emotional distress

  • Difficulty functioning day to day

Therapists are licensed and regulated by state boards. Life coaching is generally not licensed or regulated the same way, which means consumers must be careful when choosing a coach.

How to Choose What You Need

Choose coaching when you are generally functioning, but you need clarity, support, structure, motivation, or accountability.

Choose therapy when emotional pain, trauma, mental health symptoms, or past experiences are interfering with your daily life, relationships, safety, or ability to function.

Sometimes, you may need both. A therapist may help you heal, while a coach may help you build structure around your next steps. A responsible coach should know when something is outside their scope and refer you to a licensed mental health professional when needed. The International Coaching Federation also identifies referral to therapy as an ethical responsibility when client needs fall outside a coach’s competency.

How to Avoid Grifting, Scams, and Unsafe Coaching

Not everyone calling themselves a coach is qualified, ethical, or honest. Before paying for coaching, slow down and do your research.

Be cautious of anyone who:

  • Promises guaranteed healing, income, love, success, or transformation

  • Pressures you to pay immediately

  • Uses fear, shame, or urgency to make you buy

  • Says therapy is unnecessary for everyone

  • Claims they can treat trauma, depression, anxiety, or mental illness without being licensed

  • Refuses to explain their process

  • Has no clear pricing, refund policy, or boundaries

  • Discourages you from seeking licensed help

  • Says their program is the only way to fix your life

  • Uses testimonials as proof of guaranteed results

The Federal Trade Commission warns that coaching and business-opportunity scams often use pressure, big promises, and “act now” tactics. Consumers should take their time, talk to someone they trust, review claims carefully, and report suspected scams.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Coach

Before investing in coaching, ask:

  • What are your qualifications, training, or certifications?

  • What exactly do you help with?

  • What is outside your scope?

  • Do you provide therapy or mental health treatment?

  • What happens if I need a licensed professional?

  • What are your prices, policies, and refund terms?

  • What does the coaching process include?

  • Are results guaranteed, or is progress based on participation and effort?

A trustworthy coach should be able to answer clearly without pressure, confusion, or manipulation.
